Management: Michael C. Boland, President

Overview: Rupununi, Inc. is the corporate umbrella for several separate endeavors owned and managed by Michael C. Boland. The enterprises are hospitality-oriented and include three restaurants and one night club. All are located within the town of Bar Harbor, Maine.

Genesis: In 1988, Michael Boland took a two-week course, Field Biology of Maine, through a community college in Philadelphia, PA. The professor has a summer home in Bar Harbor. This was Boland’s introduction to Bar Harbor—it was ‘love at first sight.’ Boland returned to Bar Harbor in 1989 and finished his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at Bar Harbor’s College of the Atlantic. He then took a position as a whale watch naturalist while working part time as a bartender in town. He tended bar at various venues for six years, all the while truly enjoying creating a community-oriented ambience within the establishments in which he worked. A naturally creative person, Boland felt drawn towards creative pursuits—and he particularly liked the amalgam of hospitality and creating “atmospheres” for his clientele. Inasmuch as, during his studies, he traveled to South America, there studying river dolphins in the Amazon and Rupununi Rivers, the latter name stuck with him. In 1995, Boland opened his first restaurant—Rupununi—an endeavor well-suited to both his hospitality and creative natures and a boon to Bar Harbor.
