Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Story Abstracts

If You Love Long Deserted Stretches of Beach, You Are Not Alone. Although You Very Well Could Be: If ever there was a romantic place tugging at one’s heart strings long past an actual visit, Cape Cod is the place. This idyllic peninsula boasts 559.6 miles of glorious coastline and more than one hundred pristine beaches where lovers can cavort, laze, stroll, sunbathe, swim, collect shells. And after the beach, there are spectacular spots for a romantic dinner, country inns with fireplaces ablaze or miles of country roads lined with ancient stone walls, four centuries of architecture, surprising shops and boutiques where that unsought treasure can be found. And there are dozens of fine jewelry stores where, if the spirit so moves one, diamond rings can be purchased to seal the betrothal.

Family Fun and A Lifetime of Memories: Family vacations are too short. Why not plan the family holiday to a destination which lives within long after departure? Cape Cod is such a place. America’s dream destination, with hundreds of miles of coastline, 15 architecturally,
culturally and historically endowed coastal towns and scores of villages, more than 100 pristine beaches, towering dunes, miles and miles of bicycle trails, whale watches, seal cruises, more than 700 restaurants, endless recreation year round, museums, historical houses, miniature golf (and more than 46 golf courses), campgrounds, state forests, clam shacks, kayaking, canoeing, dune tours, horseback riding... And, long after the vacation has
ended, even the youngest will rejoice at remembering those heady days this side of the bridges.

The Cultural Cape: If one thinks sun, sand and sea are all Cape Cod has to offer, think again. With more than 80 museums, four centuries of architecture, dozens of historic sites and societies, band concerts, symphony, theater and opera companies, art museums and artists colonies Cape-wide, the shoreline aspects almost pale by comparison. Imagine,
however, a destination which provides intellectual and recreational stimulation plus more than 700 restaurants, 150 antiques shops and galleries, Cape Cod Melody Tent, more than 50 miles of bike paths, 559.6 miles of coast, more than 100 beaches and a surfeit of dining, lodging and shopping. Our Route 6A, the Old King’s Highway, is the nation’s largest
historic district, encompassing 70 miles and four centuries of American history and architecture. Cape Cod is an enduring cultural—and a fun-filled recreational—destination. Small surprise that Cape Cod was named America’s #1 Arts Destination* (as voted by the readers of AmericanStyle magazine in 2000).

Cape Cod Soft Eco-Adventures—Hard to Beat, Impossible to Forget: Cape Cod is a peninsula with a wonderfully diverse terrain. And soft adventurers will find the Cape a Mecca. Consider that the winding roads and bowered byways offer special ways of experiencing Cape Cod—each tree-covered lane offers its own treasures for discovery. Then
there are bicycle trails—Cape Cod Rail Trail, Shining Sea Bikeway, Nauset Trail, Province Land Trail, Head of the Meadow Trail and a 14-mile loop spanning both sides of the Cape Cod Canal. These are generously supplemented by miles and of miles of paved bike routes. Hikers will thrill to the delicate environments and flora and fauna which exist just a short
distance ‘off the beaten track.’ Then there are our great marshes, heath, moors and barrier beaches—each containing its own ecosystems—which lend themselves readily to discovery. Towering dunes in the Outer Cape are the legacies of both glaciers and wind and waves. Explore these soft behemoths either on foot or on an organized dune tour. Windsurfers ply
their craft at numerous beaches along our 559.6 miles of coastline and kayakers and canoers can be found both along our gently flowing rivers and in our 365 crystal clear ponds as well as in our bays, estuaries and open ocean. Soft adventure lovers will find endless pursuits here on Cape Cod—a place of compelling natural beauty—all within a short drive from their next adventure, a place to shop or a wonderful seafood meal.

Get into the ‘Swing’ of the Cape: Die-hard golfers can golf on Cape Cod for more than one month without ever playing the same course twice. With 33 public and 13 private courses, many highly acclaimed, Cape Cod is a golfer’s Mecca. Imagine playing golf in the shadow of a lighthouse, or within sight of Cape Cod Bay. Blessed with a temperate climate and a January mean temperature of 37º F, golfers need not be obsessed to play in the winter
months. The Cape was named one of Golf Digest’s ‘Top Ten’ of 309 U.S. golf destinations. South Yarmouth’s Blue Rock Golf Course was named ‘number 4 short golf course in the country’ by Golf Digest. Another publication, Maximum Golf, named The Captains Golf Course in Brewster as one of its ‘100 Best Bargain Courses’ in the country. Golf magazine selected the championship course at Mashpee’s New Seabury as one of the ‘Top 100’ courses. The New Seabury course was also included in Travel & Leisure’s ‘Top-20 Public Access Courses’ in New England along with Cranberry Valley Golf Course in Harwich. And, after the game is over and a golden sunset burnishes the beaches and fairways, there are hundreds of restaurants and night spots for dining and entertainment, not to mention our 115 beaches
for a moon-lit stroll.

Preserving and Protecting Cape Cod for Posterity: Cape Cod’s fragile environment deserves special attention. The interplay of mankind and Cape Cod’s flora and fauna exist in a near-perfect balance. Cape Codders, stewards of this hallowed peninsula, happily share the terrain with visitors. Regardless of season, visitors can experience and get close to Nature without intruding upon it. Walking and hiking paths have been developed with the Cape’s indigenous wild and plant life in mind. With 365 ponds, tidal flats, marshes, barrier, bay and ocean beaches, estuaries and rivers, kayakers and canoers can get ‘up close and personal’ with all manner of critter and plant. Cape Cod National Seashore, 27,000 acres, is perhaps the most perfect place to ‘become one’ with Nature. Within its benevolent girth are towering sand dunes, incredibly wild and wonderful ocean and bay beaches, nature trails, heath and moor and precincts so hallowed that they inspired famous writers such as Henry Beston and Henry Thoreau to wax incredibly poetic about a place they felt the need to share with posterity forever. But no one enters—or leaves—Cape Cod unmoved.

Cape Cuisine—Fish, And a Whole Lot More: There’s a fish in the Cape’s name, but there’s more than fish to Cape Cod cuisine. For seafood lovers, the fish are so fresh, they practically jump to your table. Of Cape Cod’s more than 700 restaurants, nearly all will feature fish entrees daily and, of these, many specialize in seafood. Lobster shacks, where patrons cozy up at harvest tables, are ubiquitous. Lobster boiled, steamed and stuffed are trademark Cape dinners, especially when they start out with steamers and are served with boiled potatoes and corn on the cob. But, the Cape is also home to dozens of celebrated and critically acclaimed restaurants featuring a wide diversity of cuisine. From the Canal to Provincetown, from Cape Cod Bay to Nantucket and Vineyard Sounds, chefs from all over the globe proffer glorious entrees featuring Continental, Italian, French, Irish, Indian, Brazilian, Native American, Portuguese, Asian, Mexican, Spanish, ‘fusion,’ Nouvelle and good old fashioned American home cooking. So, gourmands and lovers of haute cuisine can feast as readily on clam fritters and lobster as they can on Chateaubriand Bouquettiere. From fast food to fabulous French, Cape Cod is a connoisseur’s gustatory paradise.

Love and Romance By the Sea: It’s true—the reality is as wonderful as the fantasy. Cape Cod, dream destination of adults and children, maker of lifelong memories, haven to which pilgrims return year after year, generation after generation, is an idyllic romantic destination. Gilded sunsets, long lazy summer days and nights on its sparkling, dramatic beaches inspire contentment on a grand scale. Our historic and indulgent country inns and bed & breakfasts are reminders of a gentler romantic age. Candle-lit restaurants are ideal venues to ‘pop the question,’ renew commitments, put a ring on her finger. And when the Cape does its magic
and entwines two hearts, it is also the perfect place to make your vows and honeymoon. Lovers invariably find the Cape less traveled—and make it theirs forever.

Cape Cod, Perfect Holiday ‘Hub:’ Located 70 miles from both Boston and Providence, a short ¾-hour flight from New York and readily accessible via interstate from everywhere, Cape Cod is a perfect holiday ‘hub.’ Set your compass for Cape Cod and spend a week or several days exploring this compelling peninsula—its beaches, museums, Provincetown, dunes, whale watches, Route 6A, architectural delights and its 15 towns. Then, if you can
tear yourself away, visit nearby Plimoth Plantation and the sights of Plymouth County. A bit further afield, take a day trip to Newport, RI, to visit its renowned mansions and historic sights and attractions. And, it’s a short 1¼-hour drive to Boston. New England’s superstar islands, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, are Cape neighbors and easy day trips from Hyannis and Woods Hole. Make Cape Cod the center of your holiday universe—you’ll find it a worthy enough destination.
